It is a tragic play from beginning to the very end. The two Maids, Claire and Solange, have been serving the lady of the house for years and, being violently jealous of her, they even try to kill her. Because of this jealousy the maids slander the lover of their Madam and as a result he is put into jail. Very soon the maids find out that he is set free, and they realize that they are in danger. It’s obvious that Monsieur would mess up the house and find the letters written by the maids. They understand they can never back down, Madam will by all means be slain and this will put an end to all their problems. The author offers his own version. The servants have killed Madam, but there is no spiritual tranquility: The ghost of the murdered never leaves them alone. Passion, deception and the feeling of being unwanted brings Claire and Solange to a tragic end.
